Who We Are
The following key staff support Building Changes' Grantmaking and Evaluation efforts.
Alice Shobe
Deputy Director
In her role as Deputy Director, Alice Shobe provides strategic leadership and management of all programmatic work performed by Building Changes including: grantmaking and evaluation, consulting and technical assistance, and advocacy and communications. She leads Building Changes' strategic business planning efforts and supports the Executive Director in all executive functions including board management and fiscal oversight.
Emily Nolan
Director of Grantmaking
Emily Nolan provides strategic direction and manages implementation of Building Changes' grantmaking and evaluation activities associated with the Washington Families Fund, Sound Families, and the Economic Opportunities Initiative. She is also leading the expansion of the Washington Families Fund in its activities focused on preventing homelessness, housing families more quickly, and building deeper connections between employment and housing systems in Washington state.
Mark Putnam
Director of Consulting and Technical Assistance
Mark Putnam manages Building Changes’ Consulting Services, which provides training, planning, individualized technical assistance, and resource dissemination to nonprofits and governments that provide services and/or funding to address homelessness. He also leads Building Changes' Economic Opportunities Initiative, a capacity-building program that improves nonprofit agencies ability to address broad economic recovery issues present in their communities.
Kelly Smith
Grants Specialist
Kelly Smith is responsible for general oversight and day-to-day management of Washington Families Fund service grants and Sound Families grants. She coordinates the application review and selection process for funding to agencies that provide service-enriched housing for homeless families. She works with grantees to ensure grant provisions are being met and grantees have the tools they need to successfully work with their clients in order to help them gain self-sufficiency and access to a healthy, stable life.
Margaret Hennings
Performance Measurement Specialist
Margaret Hennings manages the monitoring and evaluation efforts for Building Changes' programs. She is currently leading the evaluation efforts for Washington Families Fund High Level and Moderate Level Service Models. Margaret is also involved with the design and implementation of a performance measurement plan focusing on Building Changes’ other program work with government and nonprofit clients.
